Join me in my Sussex studio to explore the world of hand block-printing with natural dyes. We will be learning how to mordant fabric, design repeat patterns, cut lino blocks, make print pastes with natural dyes and print our own fabrics.
As a pattern maker, textile printer and natural dyer – I am passionate about slow, local production that creates beautiful fabric and is kind to our environment. I have developed my own approach to block printing with natural dyes over many years and am influenced in particular by my research into the 1930’s block printers Phyllis Barron & Dorothy Larcher.
During the workshop we will explore the different properties of a range of natural dyes – including madder, cutch and iron and learn how to make them, apply them using printing blocks, print them on mordanted cloth and ensure they are fast. We will be using a variety of fabrics – cottons & linens and keeping detailed notes throughout the day.
Workshop numbers are limited to 2/3 people and the cost is £120 with all materials included – including fabric and a delicious lunch.
